Mount Emu

About

Take-off The setup area is a clearing used as a helicopter drop area for fire fighting teams. The Emu 1 launch itself is an earth ramp with a tree slot. Ensure the wind is straight before committing to launch. When launching, ensure you have excess air speed to help you counteract any turbulence. A mistake on launch is likely to result in an impromptu tree landing. Flight Once airborne it is best to stay on the ridges to improve your chances of locating thermals. Since the launch is at the Mt Beauty end of the Kiewa Wall, you can follow the ridge for about 40km to the NNE. This is especially convenient for out and return flights. Flying in the other direction is limited as the valley ends at Mt Beauty after about 5km. Extensive cross country flights are possible by working up the Kiewa Valley, or by crossing over in the direction of Bright (noting there is a large stretch of trees for several km in this direction and also unlandable paddocks).

Landing Zones (9)

Baird's - Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 1,361 m / 4,465 ftHdg: 0° N

Mt Emu landing paddock - Baird's. Not visible from launch. Usually full of horses, just land away from them. This is the only paddock where it is OK to land near horses. Granma Roper's is a better LZ for HG albeit further from Mt Emu than Baird's which is still the closest LZ and might suit PG's better.

Granma Roper's - Alternate Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 0 m / 0 ftHdg: 0° N

The owner is Peter Roper, who has asked only that the gate is left locked. He's happy that we keep a windsock fixed to the fence as in the past. Granma Roper's is a better LZ for HG albeit further from Mt Emu than Baird's which is still the closest LZ and might suit PG's better. There is a power line running north-south along the eastern boundary to Granma Roper's. Ensure you inspect it before landing there and when you do give yourself enough height when arriving to keep clear of it. If landing here don't fly low over the triangular paddock immediately east, as there can be horses here. The recommended approach is to keep to the south of the Mountain Creek Rd bend when approaching to land into the north or west avoiding the horse paddock and powerlines as well.

Hood’s - Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 0 m / 0 ftHdg: 0° N

Two spacious open paddocks which provide safe options if you are unable to make it back to the Mt Emu LZ. The paddocks slope gently down to Loudens Lane which borders the west side of the paddocks providing a gentle side landing into the valley breeze. Be aware of the power line (shown in red) which parallels the road at the foot of the slope. Take care for stock and walk out down the fence line to the gate opposite the Mt York Road turning. Retrieve vehicles pick up from the junction of Loudens Lane and Mt York Road. If you wish to sample the (tasty!) product of this and other local farms visit the Tawonga South Butchery.

Josh Hallright - Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 0 m / 0 ftHdg: 0° N

The owner is more than happy for anyone to land on any of his property. Realistically, the front paddock is the only landable terrain with a slight slope towards the dirt road on the Northern end. This is Larkin lane and it is accessible with a 2WD from Mullagong Road. The gate is likely to be locked - please climb over the strainer post in the corner of the paddock as opposed to climbing over the fence or gate.

MacDonald’s - Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 0 m / 0 ftHdg: 0° N

A large area of mixed pasture offering a number of near-level areas for safe landing into the valley breeze. Be wary of the deeper gullies. Walk out to Bohun’s Lane which can also be accessed by retrieve vehicles. The landowner is also comfortable with landings to the north of Bohun’s Lane. Greet the owners if you see them.

Mt. Beauty Airport - Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 0 m / 0 ftHdg: 0° N

The Mt Beauty airstrip is a good place to land but watch for glider and GA traffic. If arriving high, lose height and land on the west side of the runway only. Gliders will do the same on the east side. Be aware that gliders may be towing into the north using a stationary winch. In that case, stay clear of the airspace immediately above the airstrip until the glider has released and the cable has been wound in.

Pat Mac's - Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 0 m / 0 ftHdg: 0° N

A very large area offering a range of options for landing. Hazards include a number of soft gullies and fences. The recommended area is a mown strip immediately behind Pat’s house (the one with the bus in the yard) or a little further north on the strip between the road and the first gully.

Seymour’s - Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 0 m / 0 ftHdg: 0° N

A safe near-flat paddock with no obstructions set behind the caravan park. Avoid the earth works to the east of the LZ.

Tawonga Reserve - Mount Emu LZ

Alt: 0 m / 0 ftHdg: 0° N

Easily recognised from overhead by the motor track, the reserve offers a range of safe options. Be aware to land away from the track itself should there be activity. The Reserve extends to the river which has a charming swimming hole. There is a clubhousebathroom at the top of the track. The managing Committee members live nearby. Greet them warmly if you see them.
