About

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian (5,199 metres or 17,057 feet), Nelion (5,188 m or 17,021 ft) and Point Lenana (4,985 m or 16,355 ft). It is an ancient extinct volcano which during its period of activity (3.1-2.6 million years ago) is thought to have risen to 6,500 m. There are 12 remnant glaciers on the mountain, all receding rapidly. The base of the mountain lies at some 5,250 feet (1,600 metres)

The Lewis Glacier is the largest ice body on Mount Kenya1. It is located on the north side of the mountain, near Point Lenana2. It has been shrinking rapidly due to climate change and is expected to disappear by 20503. Scientists have been monitoring its ice mass and shape since 1934 and have found a drastic and progressive loss of ice over the years. In 2014, a photographer named Simon Norfolk documented the former boundaries of the glacier by using fire to draw them on the ground. The glacier is a source of water for many streams and marshes on the mountain’s slopes1.
